Daisuke! Thank you so much for this discussion on the film *I Am Cuba* ! Again, due to the excitement that you and others expressed upon the announcement of this film coming to the Criterion collection, I put this film on my life's cinema journey wishlist. Thank you as always for helping to lead me to these films. I'm no expert in the history of Cuba and practically all I know about it comes from Scarface, Seinfeld, and the Elion Gonzalez situation, but still I have always been attracted to Cuba's exotic allure. There have always been these lingering questions in my mind as to what was the situation in Cuba like and I must admit, I am definitely attracted to the stereotypical image of the 'Havana style' with the music, clothing, cars, sugarcane, cigars, rum, special glassware etc etc. On top of this attraction level, there are the questions I have regarding Cuba's revolution and turn to Communism during this time in history and how does it tie to Russia? This film furthered my "education" big-time and witnessing the cinematography was a borderline religious experience for me. It is no wonder that Martin Scorsese is an advocate/savior of this film from disappearing into obscurity. The use of sound is something I must mention before I forget, but even now picturing that lounge singer and towards the end of his performance how the sound brings to mind certain scenes in Scorsese films. I'd be here all day mentioning certain shots in this film, but HOLY COW! I went into this film totally blind as far as what to expect and the black & white picture combined with the camera-work was beyond mind-blowing. One of my favorite parts of this film was when the scene is cutting between the old man sugarcane farmer and him spending time with his wife and child in the fields when he was younger before the situation became so dire and ironic... How they tell these stories and leave you so stunned about what the individual lives must be like in this country given all the situations going on. I now have so much more perspective when I think about Guantanamo, American involvement, Russian involvement, Castro, university aged involvement, all presented in this beautifully crafted film that has an almost documentary type of feel. This was so epic, Daisuke! Just to mention another situation in that great vignette about the sugarcane farmer. When he sends his kids off with his last peso and they use it for a Coca-Cola and to listen to music on a juke box... Just another amongst so many scenes that I love. The reaction of that man finding his love with the man, the camera on that boat towards the beginning, bombs falling that cause a man to turn to action, the camera going INTO a pool from the top of a building, beautiful Cuban women with Amy Winehouse-like beehive hairdos, a camera sweeping through a cigar rolling area, a narrator that transitions the vignettes brilliantly with these amazing shots of the environment... I could go on and on! This film is.... Revolutionary! How did it come to be that people from Russia would work so hard to put together this geniusly crafted film? I have not yet read the essay as of the time of this comment, but I look forward to acquainting myself with this film further. Your discussion and passion for this film has helped my experience immensely, as always! Yes, I am again so thankful for Criterion for allowing me to experience these films in such pristine condition. I eagerly await watching this film again when I have a proper 4K setup. Could it be that this beautiful film will look even better?!? My need to invest in the Criterion 4K releases becomes something for further consideration when I know I love these experiences so much. If I can get some sharper, higher quality images of Dr. Seuss palm trees and these beautifully chaotic scenes such as a drive-in burning down, then I will be so excited! If only Criterion's A-team worked on more releases these days. I would like to echo some previous sentiments I have shared about how I disagree with how Criterion has decided to do less with the presentation than in days past. It would have been epic to have been presented with a title screen image instead of just a grey Criterion 'C' upon putting this disc in the player and can we please start to see more stapled booklets or digipaks that could sometimes service to commemorate such epic titles like this one. In the end, those details are secondary to the fact that I am still a proud owner of this influential film. Thank you again for bringing attention to this, Daisuke! Cheers!

Good to hear from you, my friend! I'm happy to hear everyone is having a good time back in Japan. Thank you for sharing this information regarding your planned purchases and the like. You always give me so much cinematic food for thought or titles to keep in the back of my mind for future DISCovery. I have still yet to see an Argento film but I know how many people seem to be big fans. I'm most attracted to seeing *Suspiria* one day but I am always at a loss as to what copy I should get of it for my first time viewing. I always appreciate how you mention the labels that create and release these titles such as Kino Lorber, Criterion, Severin, etc. It occurs to me more and more how thankful I am to these teams that restore and preserve these films. I think the only Kino Lorber film I own is *The Good Son* on Blu-ray. Recently I watched for the first time the film *Palm Springs* which is a Hulu original film and I absolutely loved it. However, it was so disappointing to see that there are no American or region A Blu-ray releases of this film while there are several good looking foreign physical media releases of this title. I enjoyed my experience with this film so much that I am seeing the future need to invest in a region free player. Last night I watched *I Am Cuba* for the first time and am absolutely stunned. I can't wait to listen to your discussion on that one. I only have *Lone Star* , *Silence of the Lambs* and the rest of the *Chantal Akerman* set before I will have watched all the Criterion titles I have purchased during this sale season. What another mind-blowing portion of my life's cinema journey that will take forever to fully process and hopefully many more opportunities to revisit these films, talk about them and share them with others. Again, thank you for the update and continue to be well while you are away. May you have many opportunities to keep cool with a CC Lemon and other Japan exclusive treats! After watching *I Am Cuba* I am suddenly craving a big fat illegal Cuban cigar and I better not get scammed like Kramer did! Have a great rest of your day and week, my friend! Cheers!

Two movies I wish would come to the Criterion Collection are Lost in Translation and the Shawshank Redemption. I think the fact that especially The Shawshank Redemption still isn't in the Criterion Collection is a crime. While Lost in Translation is my favorite movie of all time, I believe the Shawshank Redemption is way too good of a movie not to be in Criterion.

Criterion changed the color timing on these 4K discs which is why they look a bit different than the blu rays. With this said I’m hesitant in terms of double-dipping as I already own the blu ray set and love the look of these films on blu ray.

Thank you for this. Yes, it is true... for me there was a slightly different look to it, and in the video I tried to express how it affected my own viewing of the film.

Hello my friend! Thank you for this discussion that I had the great pleasure of listening to just now after watching this film for the first time a few days ago. I really try my best to keep my ear to the ground when it comes to discovering films that I might have an interest in seeing, so when I first started hearing rumblings about this director Béla Tarr and how good this film Werkmeister Harmonies was supposed to be, I added it to my Criterion wishlist. Now, after having watched the movie... Wow... Yet another mind warping experience brought to me through the Criterion collection. "I will be hard on you!" says the screaming kid into the fan while the other kid jumps up and down clanging stuff together... I was getting hardcore "meeting above the convenience store" vibes during that scene. What a unique style of filmmaking I am being introduced to in this film with the limited amount of long-cuts. I particularly liked the part where the "carnival" first arrives and it takes quite some time for the trailer to pass the screen before a man slowly cranks the ramp down and instantly sets up his little stand. All the many walking scenes and how the sound is used.. Is it just me, or does the vocal track and other sounds appear a little off? It's as if the words were recorded separately and then matched to the film slightly out of sync with the mouths and it gave me a very strange vibe. Perhaps I am wrong, but that is something I thought I picked up on. The same being said during the riot scene where sound is completely different than what you'd expect. It gives the most haunting effect ever when you think about it after the film is done. That horrific image of the man that ends that scene... The essay included really helped me wrap my head around what this film might have been trying to say about political things but also at the same time tying it to the workings of the cosmos itself. The fact this film was made in the year 2000 takes it to a higher plane for me and I think the essay also points that out quite well. Just taking this film in as a visual or musical spectacle is really something and I wouldn't expect this film to be for everyone but taking in the cinematic style was a moment I loved. I think the very first image of the fire not being completely put out by the water was an important thing to remember but there are a ton of things that I think need considering in this film to get the full picture and I know I am nowhere near the level of intelligence I would have to be at to understand it all. I just know that seeing this main character navigating a complex world where "harmony" seems to be out of reach for the populace while there are greater forces at work that include the impossibility or mysticism of the creation or existence of whales themselves... The synopsis really sums up a lot of what this film could be about too where the "societal collapse" could be referring to many things including "current events" etc. Yes, this is a rather provocative film that has challenged my brain and given me many things to consider.. I just know I really want there to be harmony in the cosmos and there not be creepy dark moments of unrest like this film presents. Whoah!!! Thank you for adding to my excitement for wanting to seek this movie out when you introduced it to me through your RUclips channel, Daisuke! Just to add a few more words to describe a bit of how I've been feeling regarding Criterion; why do newer releases by Criterion sometimes seem like there is less effort in the presentation? I've mentioned it before and let me first stress that it is "not that important", but there seems to be a lot more foldout leaflets instead of booklets. Not only that, but when I first put in a videogame or Blu-ray into my player, I usually get a unique image that appears on the menu screen before I even press play. Why is it that Criterion seems to now, in my opinion, lazily take a step back and only include a grey background Criterion "C" logo now? I don't want to sound like I'm that upset but I just hate to see what I consider a step back in terms of quality of presentation by Criterion. At one point, the people that create these physical media releases cared enough to seek an image from the film for unique presentation and now they do not. Hmmm... Okay, criticism over. I hope you are well, Daisuke. Can't wait to hear you talk more about some great movies like this one again! Cheers!
